Lydia with her passion and her anger is a very convincing teenager and the hopelessness of her situation is extremely claustrophobic, so when a resolution does present eventually itself it's a blinding relief.

She was Viking-like in appearance, impressively statuesque with bright blue eyes and very pale flaxen hair. In this context with Carne there is one piece of information, a marital rape, which the reader knows (eventually), but

In writing the novel, Holtby – an ardent feminist, socialist and pacifist – drew on the experiences of her mother, Alice Holtby, the first woman to be appointed to the position of alderman on East Riding County Council. The story of Lydia is repeated in many Scottish novels – though the teacher and pupil are generally male!

When circumstances conspire to force Lydia to leave school, Sarah must find a way of enabling her to come back. It also allows Holtby to explore the irritations and corruptions inherent in the system and she does so with a good deal of relish. Lydia Holly, the scholarship girl from the shacks, is the most brilliant student Sarah has ever taught, but when her mother's health fails, her education must be sacrificed - there is nobody else to care for the children. Sarah Waters, a well-respected UK author, who said, ‘I can’t say enough good things about this book. I've seen this book criticized for the space devoted to mundane aspects of adult life--the book focuses as much on the characters' working lives as their personal ones--but that's one of the reasons I loved it. I’m hoping to watch the BBC mini series at some point, whenever it moves to the top of the rental list.

for whatever reason I thought it was clever at the time, when I was growing to really like Sarah Burton, the headmistress of the school for girls in South Riding: I was born to be a spinster, and by God, I’m going to spin. Winifred Holtby was a committed socialist and feminist who wrote the classic South Riding as a warm yet sharp social critique of the well-to-do farming community she was born into. On another, it’s a feminist book concerned with the destinies of women from different points along the social spectrum, both young and old. asylum in Harrogate; the other half he divided between Maythorpe, his horses, and his daughter (if she was his daughter), Midge.Beddows: as the South Riding's first female alderman, she's expected to be colorful and allows people to believe outlandish stories about her, but in reality she's more conventional than that, a worldly-wise grandmother who finds happiness through community involvement--and through the attention of Robert Carne, whom she views as a combination of attractive male friend and spiritual son-in-law. Holtby had been Brittain's intimate friend since their days at Somerville College, Oxford, in the years immediately following the first world war.

There is an unmistakable sense of authenticity here, an author writing about a place she knows intimately and the heartbreak of the people who inhabit it.It is a world of the 1930s where some women are carving out a career, others have more traditional roles, and where issues such as too many children and inadequate maternity care affect others. Yes, Astell declares his love for Sarah in the TV version which definitely is no part of the book, admitted, yes Mr Holly is supposed to be a little fellow and is played by a tall one in the TV series but by and large I thought that everything that mattered had been dealt with more or less fairly even if I maintain my view that the TV version was too rushed.
