My students introduced me to KR last year and when I saw this one at the book fair I couldn’t resist. From Paris to Prague, from Glasgow to Geneva, photographer Samuel Zeller captures the strange beauty of exotic plants seen through the dappled glass of greenhouses. She is trapped in a labyrinth and has just 60 minutes to escape and reveal the secret plans of the businessman Anastas Vecla and the Wanstein Club. One or two of the puzzles are a bit simplistic, but mostly they are pitched at a good level for the general reader, and some are quite tricky. The prison camps seemed quite innocuous with the German guards being reasonably civilised and generally guided by the Geneva convention.

Het duurt even voordat het plezier van de verschillende deelnemers omslaat in iets duisters en na een tijd moet iedereen zelfs vrezen voor zijn of haar leven. The whole ‘things going wrong’ part is completely limited to what is already stated in the synopsis. I am not sure if she really thought it was that great, or if it was more our shared love of horror books and Jurassic Park. These previously unpublished photographs by David Granick capture the streets and waterways of London’s East End in the warm hues of Kodachrome film.

I know enough not to expect realism from Alexander or from any horror novel written for 8 to 12 year olds. Investigative journalist Candela Fuertes is at rock bottom: her fight against Castian Warnes, the head of the powerful and sinister Wanstein Club, has undermined her credibility as a journalist, and meanwhile she suspects Warnes is behind the car accident that put her boss in hospital.Cody and his new (celebrity) friends will have to work as a team if they hope to survive what is supposed to be the greatest week of their lives. In 1963, the Mirisch brothers worked with United Artists to adapt the book to produce the film The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough.

Each time you solve a puzzle, the number you arrive at will indicate the page from which you can continue the story. The reader takes on the character of Sherlock Holmes, and the story unfolds differently according to the choices made and the solutions found.
