The event cards may add a little wrinkle here and there to the overall flow of the game but all their game-changing rules are clearly presented on the cards themselves. While some Viking players will be set on invading somewhere specific, the English are often the ones who determine where the first invasion happens. The core of the gameplay is driven by the cards played by the active faction, which will either be an event card or a movement card. If there are 14 or more Viking Control markers on City Shires at the end of any round, the Vikings immediately win. There are also special event cards that can be played on your opponent's turn, reflecting various historical events such as the conversion of some Vikings to Christianity or the infighting between various English kingdoms.

I’d argue that 2 players is the ideal count, allowing you to control both forces on your half of the conflict. Hit results cause an enemy unit to be defeated (opponent’s choice, except if a Berserker is present and the Viking player is attacking. And when I find a good board game that can bring together historical settings with fantastic game play, I’m super excited.I hope that you have enjoyed these Action Points on this great game and I hope that you get a chance to try it out for yourself. We shall be reviewing books, miniatures\toy soldiers, MiniFigs and of course games, plus interviews, model making and AARs! Not only do they include a historical background section in the rulebook, they’ve also added historical tidbits to all the events cards.

I love Academy Games (and any other publisher that does) for allowing designers the space to add some context to the game they’ve designed. The choosing faction is decided by which Viking faction has their cube drawn from the draw bag first.

In looking at the picture, you would assume that the Battle went to the English, and it did, but it wasn’t as easy as you would think. One other interesting note about Battle is that the Vikings have to lose a Berserker unit as a part of their first loss in any Battle that Berserkers are present. Something like that to give movement options while also ensuring you have event cards at your disposal all game. The English start the game controlling all of England but a Viking Leader will invade from the sea each Turn. Although the rules are simple there is enough in here, especially with 4 players, to keep even the most experienced of Grognards entertained.
