Description

The manufacturer’s name varies according to the age of each set and boxes sometimes carry “Charter Series”, “Carson-Baker” or “Carbak” names and logos, depending upon when they were made. There was a pair of tweezers for handling the fiddly letters, but I was always losing some as they fell on the floor and bounced away, which is why every so often a new set was needed. The John Bull Printing Outfit – originally produced by the Charter Stamp Company, a printing firm established in the City of London in 1922 – was among Britain’s oldest and most popular toys. I think you were intended to set it up once and keep on using the same message (which is what I did, I put a shortened version of my postal address on it to stamp the back of envelopes, etc) but there is no reason why you can't change it. The John Bull Printing Outfit No 9 is contained in a colourful cardboard box and originates in the 1960s.

The product range expanded and by the early 1960s included a small rotary hand press which could accommodate several lines of rubber type in a grooved drum. I noticed that our local stationers sell library style date stamps, so it follows they must also sell ink pads. The John Bull trademark was sold to Dekkertoys of Peterborough in the late 1980s, but today the famous printing sets are no longer available. Rubber illustration blocks would be introduced into the sets by the late 1920s, but had also been sold separately under the “Charter” name for three decades or more. This has been an jnteresting thread and one of the links provided by David suggests one of the inks will print onto plastic - that is quite exciting if it will work on cassettes (wonder if the ink stains the letters blocks?

On 10/04/1961 the number one single was Wooden Heart - Elvis Presley and the number one album was GI Blues - Elvis Presley. The name of their small enterprise—The Charter Stamp Company—means very little today, but their most famous product—the John Bull Printing Outfit —is probably more fondly remembered than the Adana press.

Heaps of thanks to Michelle and Stuart for this excellent gift – I’m still smiling and messing about with it! Though I suspect that if you asked for such a thing these days you would be treated with a blank stare of non-comprehension.One of my jobs at work is proof-reading the puzzles page for our newspapers, which kind of spoils the enjoyment, really. More of the history and prehistory of the John Bull kits appears at British Letterpress in 100 Objects. It came with a little ink pad, tweezers, strings of rubber letters which you had to tear apart into individual letters — preparatory to losing them all!
