The Hoon books were always meant to be fun, I mean they go dark at points, but it’s always been me having an absolute blast writing them. He swore he’d never set foot there again, but almost four decades after he left, Bob Hoon is finally going home.

When I wrote a second one then the sales of the first book skyrocketed, and by the time I wrote the third one I was earning more in one day on these three books than I was in six months on all my traditionally published books combined. And, as the series progressed, I took a perverse delight in making Bob that bit worse in every book. This book was a lot of fun, we got a bit more of Bob’s sister Berta who is rude and aggressive but great with kids (weirdly enough) and of course we got all the Die Hard action of Hoon swinging around killing people and cursing and generally making a mess!

Didn't think that we were going to be having a zombie in this book but by the cover art, I wondered. I suppose it’s been like a tour of all my writing inspirations as well, so it goes through books I’ve read, films I’ve seen, and there’s little winks and nods to those, down all the way to things like how my daughter’s really into anime and there’s little nods to that in there. Guest appearances by the DCI Logan team are the cherry on the top of this high intensity crime showdown. If you haven’t read Northwind, Southpaw, Westward and Eastgate, do yourself a favour and get stuck in. The man is nothing if not persistent, and before long I had stopped thinking about whether it was possible for readers to root for him, and had started thinking about the how.

A larger than life bully with a penchant for bad language, Hoon was a deliberately over the top caricature—a barely human monster who existed largely to make the lives of the other characters that bit more difficult. The Hoon stories on the other hand are proving just as dark and brutal as Smith’s, and this one maybe even more so. But the Noon series was a hoot, and I highly recommend it to anyone that doesn't mind blood, guts, gore, and a filthy mouth!

Bob and Berta, the dream team, against an army of killer Santas, what more could anyone want in a book?

Then we went away on holiday, and Space Team started outselling all my kids’ books, but I’d done no marketing for it. This book will satisfy that violent, explosive Christmas requirement for those that do in fact believe that Die Hard is a Christmas movie (IT IS! From the opening paragraph to the closing line this is a roller-coaster of tension, humour, gore, pathos.Don’t get me wrong it still had the normal foul mouthed ex superintendent along with his sister Berta backing him up . As funny and suspenseful as usual, it made me laugh uproariously, while cringing at what was going on. But what I’ve found is, it does really well in the Highlands, my series, because people really like reading about where they live, but internationally it also does really well too. They were quite mixed, it was half going, ‘I absolutely hate this character and skip over all his scenes’, and the other half going, ‘I love him, he’s the greatest character I’ve ever read’.
