The specifications of this model make it a reliable choice for those looking for a television with a large display and energy-efficient features.

The aluminium plate stand offers very little clearance, which means a soundbar will block off the IR receiver. The Tru HDR mode on the Toshiba adds an HDR effect to SDR content but, while there’s a good case for using it on Full HD material, it’s best switched off at SD level. The package dimensions of the Toshiba 55UA3A63DB are 1215 millimeters in width, 154 millimeters in depth, and 780 millimeters in height. It breaks down the TV’s picture performance into three parts: micro dimming, motion control and upscaling. And when it comes to Dolby Vision, there are two choices: Dolby Vision Bright and Dolby Vision Dark.In fact, we much prefer the pictures of Toshiba’s substantially cheaper 50UK4D63B, proving – not for the first time – that just throwing Quantum Dots at a screen isn’t the guarantee of better picture quality you might expect. The app selection is nowhere near as big as what you’d find on Toshiba’s Fire TV or Android models, missing big hitters in Disney+ and Apple TV+.

Nor is there any of the overt smearing or excessive judder we still often see on budget TVs, even with 24p movie sources. First, its 55-inch screen uses Quantum Dots to make its colours, rather than the more common but less efficient and less effective filters. Some of their other TVs have moved to Android or Fire TV, and it does feel as if Toshiba’s own models have been left behind in terms of apps and features. We’re also oddly drawn to the way the bottom edge protrudes forward with a slightly industrial, squared-off feel. We currently haven’t received answers to the questions on this product, but will update this page the moment we do. Watching Aquaman in HDR10, the clouds in the scene where Jason Momoa’s title character rescues a Russian submarine look shapeless and indistinct.

The HDMIs support Automatic Low Latency Mode and ARC audio pass through, but not 120Hz, variable refresh rates, or the eARC system that can be used to pass lossless Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks over HDMI to compatible soundbars and AVRs.And Toshiba hasn’t scrimped on the smart side either, with the revamped UI home to such apps as Netflix, Prime Video and Rakuten TV. This means, based on past experience, that it may remain enjoyable to watch from a wider viewing angle than VA rivals, but will likely struggle to deliver serious contrast. Despite these relatively small niggles, though, the 55QA5D63DB sounds impressive overall for such an affordable TV.

It switches on a lot of that dynamic control and local dimming processing power – although we’d recommend fiddling with the Colour Temperature option to remove the sepia tinge.

The speakers even have the dynamic range and power to keep on growing in step with an escalating action scene – something many TVs costing way more fail to do – and the sound consistently has direct impact, rather than sounding as if it’s all getting swallowed up somewhere behind the screen. You’ll find imperfections if you sit close enough, but at a normal viewing distance there's little to complain about. Again, you need to choose a Dynamic Contrast setting that best suits your personal taste, but the picture is good either way. Drax’s belly laughs are as rootless as Rocket’s New York whine and ELO’s Mr Blue Sky is barely underpinned by a bassline at all.
